These are intensive one-year maths courses, which for evening classes include 3 additional Saturday sessions (dates to be confirmed). These courses aim to take learners to the Edexcel Maths (linear) qualification. The Higher tier exam provides grades ranging from A*- C whereas a C is maximum grade achievable within the Foundation tier

These courses are demanding, and assume a good level of maths to start the course and for this reason all prospective students are required to attend an initial pre-course Maths assessment, which provides an indication of your current Maths skills. On completion you will receive feedback and guidance as to whether Higher or Foundation is the best route for you. You may be advised to take a Functional Skills Maths course before starting your GCSE the following year. Further Mathematics GCE AS / A2 Level

The aim of the course is to give you a very broad and in-depth mathematical experience. For example, in the normal A Level you may only do a little Statistics and Mechanics, but in Further Maths you would look at many other areas of Maths such as Numerical Methods and Decision Maths. To gain an A Level in Further Mathematics you must study six units, two of which are Pure Mathematics. These are called FP1 and FP2. The remaining four modules are applied modules such as Mechanics or Statistics. You can find detailed information on the website: www.mei.org.uk. Year 1 • Complex Numbers and Proof by Induction are both examples of Pure Maths topics in the first year. In addition, if you are studying Statistics, you would also look at topics such as Hypothesis Testing. Year 2 • Polar Coordinates and Further Complex Numbers are both examples of topics you will study in the second year. In addition, if you are studying Mechanics, you would also look at topics such as Circular Motion and Frameworks.

Mathematics GCE AS Level / A2

To gain an A level in Mathematics you must study six units, four of which are Pure Mathematics. These are called Core 1 to Core 4. The remaining two modules are applied modules such as Mechanics or Statistics. The AS Level consists of Core Maths 1, Core Maths 2 and usually either Statistics 1 or Mechanics 1. You can find detailed information on the website: www.mei.org.uk. Year 1 • Algebra, Trigonometry, Geometry and Calculus are all examples of Pure Maths topics in the first year. In addition, if you are studying Statistics, you would also look at topics such as Probability and Hypothesis Testing. Year 2 • Numerical Methods, Vectors and Further Calculus are all examples of topics you will study in the second year. In addition, if you are studying Mechanics, you would also look at topics such as Forces and Projectiles.

Healthy Numbers

Explore the maths to be found at your local doctors’ surgery or hospital. Further your skills in measurements and graphs by thinking about dosage of medicine, body temperatures and vital signs. This is a Level 1 course and excellent preparation for Functional Maths qualifications. Courses are offered on a residential or non-residential basis and take place in the grade 1 listed landscape of Wentworth Castle near Barnsley. Many courses last from 3 to 5 days to provide a short, intensive and enjoyable learning experience.
